How to Start a Prayer Circle with Friends

A step-by-step way to gather a few trusted friends to pray together for the same people, in person or from your phones.

Some burdens are too heavy to carry alone. A prayer circle is a small group of trusted people who commit to pray for the same person or need. It can meet in a living room or live on everyone’s phone.

“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them.”
Matthew 18:20 (WEB)

1. Start small

Three to six people is ideal. Choose people who will actually pray and who can keep things confidential.

2. Agree on one focus

A circle for “Grandma’s recovery” or “Mark and Lisa’s adoption” stays more focused than a general group. You can always start another circle later.

3. Make praying visible

Part of the encouragement is knowing others prayed today. Share a short update or simply say “prayed” so everyone sees the circle is alive.

4. Share updates, then answers

Ask the person or family for updates you can pray into. When answers come, celebrate them together.

5. Keep it gentle

No one should feel guilty for missing a day. A circle is a gift, not a task list.

Lift’s prayer circles let you invite friends with a link, see when someone prayed, and share updates and amens in one place.

Common questions

How many people should be in a prayer circle?

Three to six people is a good size: small enough to stay personal, large enough that someone prays every day.

Can a prayer group meet online?

Yes. Many circles pray from their phones and share updates through an app, then meet in person when they can.
