How to Keep a Prayer List You’ll Actually Use

Why most prayer lists get abandoned, and a simple system to keep praying for the people you promised.

Many Christians have started a prayer list in a notebook or a notes app and stopped a few weeks later. The list grows, it starts to feel like homework, and eventually it goes quiet. That is not a faith problem. It is a design problem.

Why prayer lists fail

  • They get too long, so praying through them takes twenty minutes.
  • Entries are vague (“Mike”), so you forget what you were praying for.
  • There is no reminder, so the list only works on good days.
  • Nothing records answers, so it never feels alive.

A list that lasts: five rules

  1. 1.Keep it small. Start with three to five people you truly want to pray for.
  2. 2.Write one line of context next to each name: what they are facing right now.
  3. 3.Pick a time and attach it to something you already do, such as coffee or the school run.
  4. 4.Rotate. Pray for a few people each day instead of everyone every day.
  5. 5.Record answers. When God moves, write it down with the date.
“Don’t be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.”
Philippians 4:6 (WEB)

Paper, notes app, or prayer app?

Paper is beautiful and focused, but it doesn’t remind you. A notes app is always with you, but it is easy to bury. A prayer app adds what both are missing: a gentle daily reminder and a place to record answered prayers.

Lift is a prayer list built around these rules. You add a name and what they’re carrying, Lift writes a short prayer for them, reminds you once a day, and keeps a journal of answered prayers you can look back on.

Common questions

How many people should be on a prayer list?

Start with three to five. A short list you pray through daily beats a long list you avoid. You can rotate more names across the week.

What should I write on a prayer list?

The person’s name, one line about what they are facing, the date you added it, and later, how God answered.
