Prayers for Anxiety and Worry, with Bible Verses

Calm, honest prayers for anxious days and sleepless nights, plus the Bible verses people return to most when worry won’t stop.

Anxiety makes everything feel urgent and nothing feel safe. Prayer will not always make the feeling vanish in a moment, but it gives your worry somewhere to go. The Bible’s invitation is simple: tell God what you are afraid of, specifically, and let him carry it with you.

“In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6–7 (WEB)

A prayer when worry won’t stop

For racing thoughts
“Lord, my mind keeps running ahead of me. I can’t stop thinking about what might go wrong. I give you this worry, by name: [say it]. You know the end from the beginning. Hold what I cannot hold. Slow my breathing, quiet my thoughts, and guard my heart with your peace. Amen.”

A prayer for sleepless nights

For when you can’t sleep
“Father, it’s late and I’m still awake. The dark makes everything bigger. Remind me that you don’t sleep, so I can. I leave tomorrow in your hands. Let my body rest and my mind be still. Amen.”

A prayer before a hard day

Before an interview, appointment or hard conversation
“Jesus, today I have to face something that scares me. Go ahead of me. Give me clear words, a steady voice, and the courage to take the next small step. Whatever happens, I am still yours. Amen.”

Verses to hold on to

  • 1 Peter 5:7: “casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.”
  • Matthew 6:34: “Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.”
  • Psalm 46:1: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
  • Isaiah 41:10: “Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you.”
  • John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you.”

A small practice that helps

  1. 1.Breathe in slowly for four counts, out for six.
  2. 2.Name the worry in one sentence. Writing it down helps.
  3. 3.Pray one verse from the list above, with your name in it.
  4. 4.Ask for one next step, not the whole solution.
  5. 5.Thank God for one thing that is still good today.

Prayer and getting help go together

Praying about anxiety does not mean you shouldn’t talk to a doctor, counselor or pastor. Many people of deep faith take medication or see a therapist, and that is wisdom, not weakness. If anxiety is stopping you from living your life, or you have thoughts of harming yourself, please reach out to a professional or a local crisis line today.

Common questions

What does the Bible say about anxiety?

Philippians 4:6–7 invites us to bring every worry to God in prayer with thanksgiving, and promises his peace will guard our hearts. 1 Peter 5:7 says to cast all our worries on him because he cares for us.

What is a short prayer for anxiety?

“Lord, I give you this worry. Hold what I cannot hold, and guard my heart with your peace. Amen.”

Is anxiety a lack of faith?

No. Anxiety is a human experience, and many faithful people in the Bible felt deep fear. Bringing it to God, and getting professional help when needed, are both good steps.
