How to Pray for Someone: A Simple Guide with Examples

A practical, five-step way to pray for a friend or family member, with example prayers you can use today.

Praying for someone is one of the most loving things you can do, and one of the easiest to forget. You do not need special words. You need a name, a moment, and an honest heart. This guide gives you a simple pattern you can repeat every day.

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”
Galatians 6:2 (WEB)

1. Start with their name

Say the person’s name out loud or in your heart. It sounds small, but it turns a vague intention (“I should pray for people”) into a real conversation with God about someone specific.

2. Name what they are carrying

Be concrete. “Mom’s scan on Thursday.” “Daniel’s new job.” “Sarah’s grief after her dad died.” If you don’t know the details, it is fine to pray for what you can see: peace, rest, wisdom, protection.

3. Pray Scripture over them

When you don’t know what to say, borrow God’s words. Philippians 4:6–7 for anxiety, Psalm 23 for fear, Isaiah 41:10 for strength, Romans 15:13 for hope. Put their name into the verse.

4. Ask for one specific thing

General prayers are good; specific prayers help you notice answers. Ask for one thing you could recognize if God answered it: a good conversation, a clear diagnosis, a door opening.

5. Close with trust, and tell them

End by handing the person back to God. Then, if it is appropriate, send a short message: “I prayed for you this morning.” People rarely hear that, and it means more than you think.

Example: a prayer for a grieving friend
“Father, I bring Sarah to you today. You know the weight she is carrying since her dad passed. Be close to her in the quiet moments, give her rest tonight, and surround her with people who love her well. Let her feel your peace that is beyond understanding. I trust her to your care. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Make it a habit, not a hope

Most of us say “I’ll pray for you” and mean it, then the day moves on. The fix is not more willpower; it is a reminder at the right moment. Write the name down, choose a time (morning coffee, the commute, bedtime), and keep the list short enough to finish in a minute or two.

Lift was built for exactly this: you add the people you promised to pray for, Lift writes a short Scripture-rooted prayer for each one, and a gentle reminder brings them back to mind each day.

Common questions

What should I say when I pray for someone?

Say their name, tell God what they are facing, pray a verse over them, ask for one specific thing, and close by trusting them to God. Two or three honest sentences are enough.

How long should a prayer for someone be?

There is no required length. A focused 30-second prayer you pray every day is better than a long prayer you never get to.

Should I tell someone I prayed for them?

Usually, yes. A short message such as “I prayed for you this morning” encourages people, as long as you keep what they shared with you private.
