Prayers for Grief and Loss: Words When Your Heart Is Broken

Gentle prayers for the first days after a loss, for long grief, and for a friend who is mourning, with comforting Bible verses.

Grief does not follow a schedule, and prayer in grief rarely sounds tidy. It can be a single word, a question, or tears. God is close to the brokenhearted, which means you can come exactly as you are. These prayers are here for when you have no words of your own.

“Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.”
Psalm 34:18 (WEB)

In the first days

Right after a loss
“God, I can’t believe they’re gone. Everything hurts and nothing makes sense. Stay close to me. Get me through today, then tonight, then tomorrow. Hold me when I can’t hold myself together. Amen.”

When grief lasts

For long grief
“Lord, it’s been a while, and people think I should be better by now. I still miss [name] every day. Thank you that you don’t rush me. Give me space to remember, strength to keep living, and moments of real joy again. Amen.”

When you are angry or have questions

For honest anger
“Father, I don’t understand why this happened. I’m angry and confused. I bring you my questions honestly, like the psalmists did. Don’t let go of me, even when I want to let go of you. Amen.”

For a friend who is grieving

For someone else
“Jesus, [name] lost someone they loved. Comfort them in the quiet hours, surround them with people who show up, and give them rest. Show me how to love them well, with presence more than words. Amen.”
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
Matthew 5:4 (WEB)

How to support someone in grief

  • Say their loved one’s name. Most grieving people want to hear it.
  • Offer something specific: “I’ll bring dinner Thursday.”
  • Remember the hard dates: birthdays, anniversaries, holidays.
  • Keep checking in after the funeral, when the calls usually stop.
  • Tell them you are praying, and keep doing it.

Grief can sometimes turn into depression. If you or someone you love can’t function day to day, or has thoughts of self-harm, please contact a doctor, counselor or local crisis line.

Lift reminds you to keep praying for grieving friends weeks and months later, when most people have forgotten.

Common questions

What is a prayer for someone who is grieving?

“Lord, comfort [name] in their loss. Be near them in the quiet hours, surround them with people who care, and give them rest and hope. Amen.”

What does the Bible say about grief?

Psalm 34:18 says God is near to the brokenhearted, and Jesus said those who mourn will be comforted (Matthew 5:4). Jesus himself wept at his friend’s grave (John 11:35).

Is it okay to be angry at God when grieving?

Yes. Many Psalms are honest complaints to God. Bringing your anger to him is still a way of staying in the relationship.
